Potential Tropical Storm Near Gulf Coast Could Bring Heavy Rain and Flooding
US · Published Jun 17, 2026
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring a system near the Gulf Coast that could become the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
As of June 16, 2026, at 8 a.m.

Why It's Important?

The system poses significant risks of heavy rainfall and flooding across the mid to upper Texas coast, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and parts of Georgia and the Florida Panhandle. Rainfall totals could reach 5-10 inches, with isolated areas receiving up to 20 inches through Thursday. This could lead to life-threatening flash flooding and urban flooding. Additionally, tropical-storm-force winds and a storm surge of 2-4 feet are possible along the Gulf Coast. Tornadoes may also develop in affected areas, increasing the risk of localized damage.
